As an English major graduating in 1963, the path to becoming an entrepreneur in the spring and wire forming business was an unexpected one for Bob Kupczak. Offered a job by his father at Jackson Spring, he seized the opportunity for personal and professional growth, embracing the economic advantages and embarking on a journey in the business world.
The Evolution of Our Equipment
In 1993-1994, Bob recognized an opportunity to expand their offerings by exploring spring manufacturing equipment from Taiwan. While not as complex as Japanese and German machinery, they were considerably less expensive, meaning they could really be the “middle of the road” opportunity for manufacturers to get their foot in the door of the spring and wire forming industry.
Through a serendipitous encounter with Herdon, a Taiwanese brand, Bob discovered a partnership that would revolutionize its business model. He notes, “At the time we started to sell Herdon, they had a yearly capacity of about 60-70 machines per year. In the first year, we sold 40 machines and turned down orders for another dozen or so because we could not make delivery. What started as an entertaining sideline had turned into a business.”
